Not battery life in a racecar, but rather a lesson in the battery life of a cell phone.

When Doug Coby announced Wednesday night that he was joining Mike Smeriglio Racing it answered a question all had been asking around the Modified Tour since the team had parted ways with Todd Szegedy in early November.

After it was clear Coby was coming aboard, Moran’s phone blew up.

“I’m so glad it’s finally done,” Moran said Friday. “The last couple days my phone has not stopped. I’ve had to charge it like four times just in the last day.”

Coby, the 2012 Whelen Modified Tour series champion and series runner-up in 2013 begins his career with Mike Smeriglio Racing in the exhibition Battle at Beach at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18. Szegedy had spent the last eight seasons in the Smeriglio Racing No. 2 car.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Doug,” Moran said. “Just watching him, he’s smooth. He brings the car home in one piece, which is a big thing. It’s the old saying that you have to first finish to finish first and he does a great job with that. Not that Todd didn’t, Todd always did too. Doug is a good, clean driver. I don’t know of anybody that hates him. He can be aggressive when he needs to be. That’s what you’re looking for in a driver.”
