STAFFORD – After winning the SK Modified feature on May 3 at Stafford Speedway, Ryan Preece said his car needed to get a little better.

Friday night Preece sent the message to competition, again from victory lane, that he’s still looking for a little bit more from his ride.

Preece, of Berlin, held off Eric Berndt to win the 40-lap SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway.

“We’re still off a little bit,” Preece said. “We’re really close. I know what I want in a racecar and [crew chief Mike Paquette] knows what he wants, and we’re getting really close to achieving it. The car is just phenomenal on the outside. It really feels so good out there.”

The race had begun on May 23, but was stopped after eight laps because of rain.

Berndt, of Cromwell, was second and Joey Cipriano of Waterbury third.

Preece has won all three SK Modified division events this year at Stafford, though he said the competition is gaining on him.

“We all keep making gains on our cars,” Preece said. “We were lucky enough to start close to where we were close enough to better than everybody else. It seems like we’ve been one step ahead, but it’s a matter of time until people start picking it up and they get their adjustments right. I’m just capitalizing on it right now, winning races and trying to put my name in the headlines.”

Said Berndt: “The car gave out with about 12 [laps] to go. I think we just abused the right rear [tire] too much. … Ryan’s car, my hat’s off to them, it stayed consistent the whole race. He’s proving to be the one to beat, so we’ve got to do a little bit more homework.”
