STAFFORD – On Aug. 20 Tommy Barrett Jr. scored the biggest victory of his young career when he won in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s annual visit to Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Friday Barrett, of Millis, Mass., carried that Tennessee momentum north to the track where he got his start in a Modified.

Barrett used a lap 57 restart to go from third to first and then drove away from the field over the final 20 laps to win the 80-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series event at Stafford Motor Speedway.

“We started off the race a little free,” Barrett said. “As the race went on the car just got better and better.”

Keith Rocco of Wallingford was second and Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, N.Y. third.

Barrett was third behind Rocco in the lead and Bonsignore in second for the lap 57 restart and went diving low out of turn four coming to the green, wrestling the lead away from Rocco through turns one and two.

“I figured that was our only chance of winning,” Barrett said. “I tried doing that the restart before that and just got loose on the apron. But that last restart, I got a real good start and so did Keith. And Keith kind of washed up a little bit and it just gave me that little extra room and I just drove it in there and it stuck.”

Said Rocco: “The car was awesome the whole race, even after Barrett got by me. I really didn’t have many complaints about the car, it was still pretty good and we still had a lot of tire under me. I don’t know how much he saved, but he was fast at the end.”
