As of now, for NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Todd Szegedy doesn’t have a full-time Modified ride for the 2015 racing season.

And he isn’t much worried about that fact.

“It’s funny because if this was five years ago I’d be stressing out over not having anything secured,” Szegedy said. “I’m really not though. My life is going well. I love to race, but life is good.”

Szegedy, of Ridgefield, has let it be known throughout the Modified scene that he’s available to race for any openings that might need filling.

All Szegedy knows about the 2015 season at this point is that he’ll likely be making some starts once again for the Rob Fuller Motorsports

Szegedy made six Whelen Modified Tour starts in 2014, five of those starts coming with with Fuller as part of the debut of Fuller’s LFR Chassis program.

He had a second place finish with the team in the F.W. Webb 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September. Szegedy said he expects to hear more this coming weekend from Fuller on the plans for the upcoming season.

“I’m sure he’ll fill me in with what’s going on with their [developmental program],” Szegedy said. “It sounds like he wants to put multiple people in the car, but I’m not sure. I think it will be fun with them again. Every time I drove that car we’ve been capable winning, we just didn’t have luck.”

Szegedy won a Whelen Modified Tour championship in 2003. After eight seasons competing for Mike Smeriglio Racing, he and the team parted ways following the 2013 season. In eight seasons with the team Szegedy finished worse than fifth in Whelen Modified Tour standings just once, a sixth place finish in 2013.

Szegedy has 18 victories and 76 top-five finishes in 187 Whelen Modified Tour starts dating back to 2000.

Szegedy started last season running full-time on the Valenti Modified Racing Series with Lowell, Mass. based team owner Kevin Stuart. Szegedy was at or near the top of the standings for most of the season, but Stuart shut down the team for the season in August after issues with series management.

“Kevin Stuart, I’m not sure what he plans on doing,” Szegedy said. “I like the [Valenti Modified Racing Series] guys, but I’m not sure I’d want to commit to running as much as I ran last year. I want to have some time to myself too. I do want to race, but how much I don’t know.”

And another option bouncing around for Szegedy is returning to his roots of racing in road course competition.

“To be honest, if I can’t find more with a Modified, would love to get back to doing some road racing,” Szegedy said. “There’s no money in road racing, but I just love to road race. If I had an opportunity I would jump on it, but I haven’t been pushing for it. I haven’t been making phone calls, which I should be. I think in another month, if I don’t have anything more, I’ll make some phone calls and see if I can try landing something.”

  2. JustaFella,
My understanding is that Bob Garbarino has not decided yet if he will be racing in 2015.

  6. You obviously don’t know Todd. Whether at or away from the track Todd is a very down to earth person. Never seen a “pompous elitist” side to him
