STAFFORD – Mike Christopher Jr.’s smile lit up when asked how fast he was getting around the road course at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park Friday.

Not surprisingly considering Christopher was hitting speeds upwards of 117 mph during practice at the track Friday.

The Legends cars will run two features Saturday at Thompson Speedway as part of the tracks Formula Lites event.

Christopher, of Wolcott, said he was going a little quicker than 117 mph on the straightaway of the 1.7-mile circuit during practice Friday.

“And in the draft we’ll probably be even faster,” the 16-year old Christopher excitedly said.

Christopher said the closest experienced to the speeds at Thompson Friday came running Virginia International Raceway.

“But there you were going uphill and it was definitely slower,” Christopher said. “Today, I was doing down the straightaway, the wheels are straight, but the body and everything is rumbling and shaking every way. But I feel safe doing it. It was awesome.”

Christopher, a regular in the SK Modified division at Stafford, was a Legends national champion last year.

The Legends races their first feature at 9 a.m. Saturday and their second race at 1:55 p.m.

“I can’t wait to race [Saturday],” Christopher said. “At practice we were a second and a half faster than anybody else. It’s going to be a good time.”
