LOUDON, N.H. – Carl Edwards showed leading the way in practice was a sign of good things to come Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver scored the pole in qualifying Friday for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

It was the 16th career Sprint Cup Series pole for Edwards, who toured the 1.058-mile oval in 27.604 seconds (137.980 mph).

“We got a great start to the Chase and we’re keeping it rolling,” said Edwards, who was second in the Chase for the Championship opening event Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. “We knew qualifying was important so we worked on it a lot today.”

Reigning series champion Kevin Harvick, who was 42nd after a wreck at Chicago and sits last of the 16 drivers in the chase field, qualified second.

Kurt Busch will start third Sunday.

Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top-five respectively.

Ten of the top 12 qualifiers were drivers in the Chase for the Championship field.

Berlin’s Ryan Preece was 37th fastest in qualifying and will make his Sprint Cup Series debut on Sunday.
