The Whelen Modified Tour has a rich history of racing in the Northeast. From Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway to Riverhead Raceway in New York, the mods provide some of the best racing that NASCAR has to offer – at any level – wherever they go. That pulse-pounding product only gets magnified when the series makes its biannual stops to New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The final stop at the Magic Mile in 2015 for the Whelen Modified Tour will be a historic one, as the F.W. Webb 100 on Saturday, Sept. 26, will be 600th race in the series’ storied 30-year history.

“This is our Daytona. Whenever we come here, we know it’s going to be a big race for us,” said two-time Magic Mile winner Doug Coby, during a practice session at NHMS earlier this summer. “Everyone takes it up a notch or two when we come here. It’s a big deal and an important race for all of us.”

The Whelen Modified Tour began its first season on March 31, 1985 at Thompson Speedway. Richie Evans picked up the win that day and rode it all the way to the championship in his only season on the Tour.

The mods raced at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the first time on Sept. 2, 1990. Mike McLaughlin earned the win, nipping Mike Stefanik by only .24 seconds to take the checkers. Since then, the Whelen Modified Tour has run at least twice a season (except 2001), every season, for 62 total races at the 1.058-mile oval.

Ted Christopher, who will be in the lineup on Sept. 26, is the all-time Whelen Modified Tour wins leader at New Hampshire with four and has raced in 52 of the 62 mod events at the Magic Mile.

With side-by-side, bumper-to-bumper racing and some of the closest finishes in the speedway’s 25-year history, the F.W. Webb 100 is sure to be one of the highlights of the SYLVANIA 300 NASCAR Weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

  1. WOW!!! That’s some press release.. 600th race!!! I’m all in and bringing the clan. Someday my youngin’ will recall that fine fall day when I took them to the 600th race in the storied 30 year history of NASCAR’s oldest division. I can only hope they will be selling commemorative tee shirts, hats, beer koozies, seat cushions and gun holsters.

It’s a shame there isn’t a tight points battle or anything – but hey, maybe they’ll have planes doing a smoke show a write 600 in the sky? I’m gettin’ me a 30 pack of Busch beer and I’ll see ya all in the stands!!!
