Saturday at the Thompson Speedway Tony Membrino Jr. kicked off his 2016 racing season in style.

The Berlin driver closed his 2015 season with an SK Light Modified division victory at Thompson Speedway last October and Saturday began 2016 the same way, winning the Icebreaker weekend 20-lap feature for the division.

And the accolades of the season opening triumph continued on Wednesday.

Membrino ended up the runaway winner in voting for the season’s first New England Racing Fuel Support Performer of the Week Award.

Membrino collected 80 of the 140 votes cast in balloting for the award (57.1 percent).

Josh Wood of Palmer, Mass., winner of the 20-lap Limited Sportsman feature Sunday at Thompson was a distant second in voting (30 votes, 21.4 percent).

Each week during the 2016 racing season the New England Racing Fuel RaceDayCT Support Performer of the Week will be chosen from among drivers competing in events in one of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly support divisions (excludes SK Modified divisions) at Stafford Motor Speedway, Thompson Speedway and the Waterford Speedbowl.

Membrino will receive a $20 certificate for race fuel from New England Racing Fuel.
