North East Motor Sports Museum
LOUDON, N.H. – The finish product is still in the making, but North East Motor Sports Museum president Dick Berggren is ready to show off the progress of his vision.
In conjunction with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bad Boy Off Road 400 weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Berggren will open the doors of the North East Motor Sports Museum Saturday at the track.
Berggren said organizers are shooting for a spring opening for the finished museum.
“We have enough money in the bank to finish it,” Berggren said. “We don’t have enough money in the bank to finish it the way we want to finish it. There’s a lot of things we want to do that we can’t right now. So we’re staying in the fund raising mode and we’ve got another six or so months to raise the money that we want to raise and we’re confident we’re going to successfully do that. No matter what, we have the funds to open the place up, get all the cars in here, get the library set up, get all the displays set up. It’s an amazing thing.”
Berggren said the emotions have been many for him as he has watched the area of the museum go from site preparation to standing building.
“My emotions depend on the day,” Berggren said. “When they first poured the foundation for it, I was here for the pour and I said ‘God this looks awful small.’ I went home and told my wife, ‘I can’t believe how small it is.’ I said ‘Did they get the dimensions wrong?’ We got in the car and drove here, it’s two hours each way. I came here with a tape measure. It was correct. … The day that I came and they were starting to frame it, that was pretty incredible. … There are still times when I walk in the door and I just have to stop and say ‘Oh my god, look at what we’ve done.’”
