STAFFORD – After nine races this season, the top-five drivers in the SK Light Modified division at Stafford Motor Speedway came into Friday nights action separated by eight points.

Four of the five drivers came into Friday’s event with victories. The one without a win has been the most consistent of the class.

Daniel Wesson came into Friday holding a four-point lead in the standings over George Nocera Jr. and Wesley Prucker, who were tied for second. Wesson also came into the night winless.

He left the track with that characterization gone.

Wesson, of Monson, Mass., held off Cory DiMatteo to win the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.

“It was actually pretty frustrating,” Wesson said of the winless streak in 2017. “We’ve been coming with our normal setup week to week. Brian Sullivan and Jimmy Sullivan came up to the shop this week and made some changes to the car and it proved itself out there on the track.”

DiMatteo, of Farmington, was second and David Arute of Tolland third. Arute came into the night six points behind Wesson in the standings and DiMatteo came in eight points off the lead in fifth.

With such a tight battle at the front of the standings, Wesson said he’d rather not be the guy on top at the midway point of the season.

“Actually I would rather not be in the points lead because it just makes me a target in my eyes,” Wesson said. “But the points battle, it’s going to be fun the rest of the year. I’ve just got to consistently finish up front and we could get a championship.”
