STAFFORD – Despite all his success in recent years at Stafford Motor Speedway, when it comes to the NAPA Spring Sizzler the event has usually been more depressing fizzler for Street Stock division Johnny Walker.

And though the racing gods had Walker thinking most of the day Saturday that another dud was in the making, in the end the reigning champ was celebrating.

Walker, of Agawam, Mass., won the 20-lap Street Stock feature at Saturday’s NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford.

George Bessette Jr. of Danbury was second and Mike Hopkins of Springfield, Mass. third.

It was the first race for the division carrying the new Street Stock name. The division was formerly known as the DARE Stock division. Walker has won the last two championships in the division.

But before Saturday he had never won on Spring Sizzler weekend.

“We had a guy misread the dipstick and we ran out of fuel in a heat race,” Walker said. “… Last year we had a steering wheel fall off. Yeah, you name it it happens at the Sizzler for us.”

“All day bad things have been happening. We lost a shift linkage. We had a skip in the motor. We had a rivet go through a tire. We’ve been battling gremlins all day.”

But when it came to getting on the track for the feature Walker was untouchable, going around Hopkins for the lead and then holding off attacks by Hopkins and Bessette.

“It’s just great to feel like we finally reversed the curse,” Walker said.

Justin Bren of Palmer, Mass. won the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature. RJ Surdell of Willington was second and Duane Provost of Palmer, Mass. third.
