STAFFORD – When the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour was last in action on July 21, it was Bobby Santos III edging Chase Dowling at the line to win the Eastern Propane & Oil 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Dowling’s mission to win his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event came up inches short in Loudon, but that chase will see him taking the field to green Friday at his home track.

Dowling, of Roxbury, won the pole in qualifying Friday for the Whelen Modified Tour Starrett 150 at Stafford Speedway.

It was the third career Whelen Modified Tour pole for Dowling and his second this year at Stafford. He also won the pole for the NAPA Spring Sizzler in April.

Dowling toured the half-mile oval at Stafford with a fast lap of 18.267 seconds.

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. will join Dowling on the front row after qualifying second with a fast lap of 18.324 seconds.

Doug Coby of Milford was third fastest in qualifying at 18.414 seconds.

Series points leader Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, N.Y. was four fastest (18.426 seconds) and Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Mass. rounded out the top-five in qualifying at 18.432 seconds.
