NEMA Midgets Prove The Show Must Go On; Head North To Monadnock After Speedbowl Cancellation

Northeastern Midget Association president Tim Bertrand was looking forward to a packed schedule for his series Saturday night at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

In addition to regularly scheduled evens for the NEMA Midgets and the NEMA Lights, the series also organized a special Dash For Cash race pitting six NEMA regulars against Keith Rocco, the Speedbowl’s all-time winningest driver, and Sammy Swindell, a legend of Midget and Sprint car racing.

The bottom fell out on those plans at about 7 p.m. Friday night when Bertrand learned that the Speedbowl was unexpectedly cancelling tonight’s event.

But Bertrand didn’t throw in the towel on the weekend plans for NEMA. Instead Bertrand got on the phone and somehow found a way to get an event scheduled.

NEMA, with Swindell still in town and ready to compete, will compete today as part of the Saturday night show at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H. The series will put a 16-car regular NEMA feature and 15-car NEMA Lites feature.

“[Monanadnock Speedway owner] Larry Cirillo and I put this deal together at 9 p.m. last night,” Bertrand said. “Before that I literally called 25 members to run it by them. They all said ‘Let’s race.’ We can’t thank Larry enough for getting us out of a jam.”
