The stars and cars of NASCAR’s Whelen Modified Tour will again converge at the Oswego Speedway for a fourth consecutive season with the running of the Toyota Mod Classic 150 on Saturday, August 31, 2019.
Since the tour’s return to Oswego for the first time since 1989, three different drivers including two first time winners have visited victory lane at the fast 5/8th’s mile including a familiar face in 11-time Oswego Modified winner Matt Hirschman.
This past September, the halfway break used in 2017 was eliminated from the race which allowed the return of live pit stops and that certainly spiced up the action as pit stops lead to an exciting battle to the finish between Hirschman, Justin Bonsignore and Ryan Preece.
After putting on a spectacular show driving through the field, Preece, the defending race winner, experienced a parts failure on the No. 6 with just a handful of laps remaining and that resulted in a spectacular crash down the front straightaway.
Hirschman was able to hold off all challenges from a red hot Bonsignore to go on to collect the $12,000 paycheck, and a win at Oswego for the third year in a row.
Doug Coby, who won the Mod Classic 150 in 2016, finished third in the 2018 running ahead of Woody Pitkat and Eric Goodale in the top five. Matt Swanson was sixth, followed by Patrick Emerling, Timmy Solomito, Blake Barney and Tommy Catalano in the top ten.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will embark on a 16 race championship slate this coming season beginning at South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday, March 16.
Following the opener, the Modifieds will then trek back north for the tour’s return to South Boston Speedway before stops at familiar venues of Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park and Stafford Motor Speedway in April.
On May 18, NASCAR will be back at Wall Stadium Speedway in New Jersey for the first time in over a decade.
The month of June will bring familiar stops at Seekonk Speedway and again at Thompson before the traditional All Star race is held as part of a two day show at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July.
Another stop at both Stafford and Thompson will take place at the beginning of August before the tour then readies for the Steel Palace on August 31.
In 2018, 25 Modifieds showed at Oswego for the 150 which is the highest car count since the inception of the race three seasons earlier.
The event will again pay $12,000 to win this coming season. It is anticipated that the 150 will also return to national television via NBC Sports coverage.
