Accelerated Pace: Joey Ferrigno Scores First Career SK Light Modified Win At Stafford

STAFFORD – Over the last three years at Stafford Motor Speedway, Joey Ferrigno has probably led more laps than any other driver at the track.

But during that time celebrating in victory lane was never a possibility for the East Hartford driver. Ferrigno was leading laps that didn’t count, driving the pace car at the track.

This year Ferrigno gave up the keys to the pace car to jump into open wheel competition and Friday the big celebration was on.

Ferrigno passed Bob Charland for the lead on lap 18 and then rolled on to the checkered flag in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature at Stafford.

It was the first career victory in the division for Ferrigno, who has previously won in the track’s Limited Late Model and DARE Stock divisions.

“That was a hell of a show out there,” Ferrigno said. “I started back in eighth and I’ve got a hell of a car under me thanks to [crew chief] Paul French. The thing was just going to the front.”

Tony Membrino Jr. of Plantsville was second and Charland, of Stafford, third.

“I got into Charland a little bit,” Ferrigno said. “I apologized. He checked up a little bit going into [turn] one and I gave him the bumper and got under him. I didn’t mean to do it on purpose.”

Said Charland: “We’re so close once again. It won’t be long. We’re getting our bumper close to theirs and it won’t be long we’re going to learn those methods and take care of some business here.”
