The Franklin, Mass. driver won the pole for qualifying for tonight’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour CarQuest 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Santos won the Spring Sizzler on April 28 at Stafford, making him eligible for the CarQuest Triple Crown bonus, which will pay a $25,000 bonus for winning the Sizzler, tonight’s event and the Fall Final at Stafford on Sept. 29.

Santos toured the half-mile oval in 18.374 seconds (97.965 mph) to grab his 11th career series pole.

“I just really love coming to Stafford, it’s a lot of fun,” Santos said. “Obviously I have a great car. [Crew chief] Steve Lemay has given me awesome setups and [team owner Sully Tinio] is giving us everything to make this team work and of course Billy The Kid horsepower under the hood is huge, it’s making a difference. … We’ve got to focus on winning tonight. That’s the hard part. The poles are the easy part, winning the race is where it’s really really hard.”

The top-three starters represent the last three series champions. Santos won the series title in 2010.

Ron Silk of Norwalk, the 2011 series champion, will start second after putting up a lap of 18.563 seconds (96.967 mph). Reigning series champion Doug Coby of Milford starts third after a qualifying lap of 18.584 seconds (96.858 mph).

Series points leader Ryan Preece of Berlin, who won the most recent Whelen Modified Tour event at Stafford on June 14, will start ninth.
