Closer: Keith Rocco Ends Frustrating Season At Stafford Speedway With SK Modified Victory

STAFFORD – The final numbers for the season in the SK Modified division are hardly the type that Keith Rocco will be pointing to as an example of a highlight season.

But, Rocco was thrilled with the way the season came to a close for him Sunday, with the hope that a strong finishing kick will translate to improved numbers in 2014.

Rocco won the 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature at the CarQuest Fall Final at Stafford Motor Speedway.

It was the second victory of the season at Stafford for Rocco, of Wallingford, who ended the season with just six top-five finishes in 18 events.

“This is absolutely awesome,” Rocco said. “We struggled all year with a chassis that we just couldn’t figure out. … This is the best way to end the year, with the struggles we had, finally getting our problems figured out and sorted out at the end of the year, we’re going to be tough next year.”

Ryan Preece of Berlin was second and Woody Pitkat of Stafford was third, which clinched his first SK Modified championship at the track.

Rocco has been on a heated roll of late. Sunday’s victory was his third in less than 24 hours. He won both the Late Model and SK Modified division features at the Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night and has already clinched championships in both of those divisions this season at the shoreline oval.

Rocco said the regular weekly racing season ending in late August at Thompson International Speedway helped his teams immensely. Rocco competes in the SK Modified division’s full time at Stafford, Waterford and Thompson.

“The last few weeks we’ve been racing two nights a week and it does show and it does help on the racetrack,” Rocco said. “You can only do so much in a week. There’s times we’re preparing five cars for a weekend and you’re doing that in three days. It definitely takes a toll on the cars and the crew sometimes.”
