With a forecast for all day rain and mid-March like temperatures forecast for Saturday Riverhead Raceway owners Eddie & Connie Partridge and Tom Gatz made the decision Friday evening to rain out the Memorial Day weekend race program that included a School Bus Figure Eight race. The early cancellation proved prudent as rain blanketed Long Island Saturday with temperatures hovering in the low 50’s.
Action will pick back up this Saturday June 5th with a busy none feature event program on tap that includes the Jim Kelly Memorial 22 Vintage All Star event and the seasons first Demolition Derby.
Heading into next Saturday night’s Buzz Chew Chevrolet NASCAR Modified 50-lap main event Dylan Slepian of Dix Hills leads the championship standing by two marker over John Beatty Jr. of Merrick and defending champion Tom Rogers Jr. of Riverhead who are tied for second. Justin Brown of Manorville and Chris Young of Calverton complete the early season top five.
Going into the weekend Young was also leading the NY State NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Division I rankings heading into the holiday weekend having also competed on May 15th at Bethel Motor Speedway in their BMS Modified division.
Completing the June 5th schedule of events are the Super Pro Trucks, INEX Legend Race Cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, INEX Bandoleros, Jim Kelly Memorial 22 Vintage All Stars, 4/6-Cylinder Gut & Go Enduro with the night concluding with a 4/6-Cylinder Demolition Derby.
Qualifying is set for 5:00 pm with spectator gates opening at 4:00 pm. Adults $30, kids 6-12 $10 with 5 and under free, tickets are sold at the track on race day only. Those not able to attend in person can watch a live stream of the nine features and all qualifying at Riverheadraceway.Tv that will go live at 4:45 pm.
