WATERFORD – Wayne Burroughs Jr. figured if he could get to the outside of Ken Cassidy Jr. maybe he had a chance for a victory making move.

A late caution gave Burroughs the chance he was looking for and the Oakdale driver took full advantage.

Burroughs used an outside run on a restart with three laps remaining to pass Cassidy for the lead and win the 25-lap Mini Stock feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

“This thing was just a rocket, Burroughs said. “It was great the whole race, we were just kind of stuck in traffic. When I was behind [Cassidy] he was doing everything he had to do to hold the bottom. I couldn’t get to the outside. I figured when we got to the outside maybe we had something for him. But he’s the best in the business and I didn’t think it was going to be easy. It just hooked up and went on that restart.”

It was the second victory in three races this season for Burroughs.

Cassidy, of Lisbon, was second and Sean Caron of East Hampton third.

The caution flew with three laps remaining with Cassidy leading and Burroughs. On the restart, Burroughs had the edge on Cassidy going into turn one and came out of turn two with the lead.

Cassidy hounded him the rest of the way, but couldn’t find a way back to the front.

“That’s what you’re out here for,” Burroughs said of battling Cassidy, the division’s all-time winningest driver. “He’s a champion. He’s a class act. He didn’t touch me. We raced each other clean. You can’t ask for anything more than that. I was actually worried that he was going to get back by me once I got by him. The car got a little loose, and as good as he is, you know he’s going to take advantage of everything. But we were able to hold him off.”

Said Cassidy: “That’s the last car I wanted to see on the outside of me with three [laps] to go. Wayne’s got a fast car this year. Congratulations to those guys.”
