STAFFORD – Stafford Motor Speedway Late Model driver Tom Fearn was proud to be sporting a new sponsor on his car Friday at the track.

And he made sure that new sponsor – Sarat Ford of Agawam, Mass. – got rewarded quickly in their new relationship.

Fearn ran away from the field easily to win the 30-lap Late Model feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.

It was the first victory of the season for Fearn, of East Longmeadow, Mass.

“I said, ‘If we put them on the car this week maybe they’ll change our luck.’” Fearn said “Apparently it did. We’ve got good news for them when we get home to tell them we won with their Ford logo on the back.”

Fearn led the way on a podium full of longtime local racing veterans. Tom Butler of Stafford was second and Jim Mavlouganes of Bethany third.

“I felt good because I was the youngest guy in the top-three,” the 50-year old Fearn said.  “… After the troubles we’ve had, we’ve been fast every week but couldn’t put it together, bad luck and broken parts and broken racecar, I wasn’t going to take any chances tonight. I just wanted to run away and hide.”

Butler recovered from a first lap spin to run back to through the field.

“I kind of got turned around at the beginning of the race and sometimes I drive a little better mad,” Butler said. “I don’t know, the guys are talking about beating me over the head with a bat before we go out. I don’t know if that’s going to work. They’re going to go through a lot of bats beating me in the head. But the car was great. … We just need a little bit more. [Fearn] was just a little bit quicker. I think if we had a few more laps I was getting closer. … We’re hoping to get a win real soon. We’ve just got to keep finishing races, that’s the name of the game right now.”

Fearn moved to second behind Josh Wood on lap four. A lap later Fearn went under Wood for the lead, with Michael Bennett following to second.

Though Bennett, the point leader coming into the night and a three-time winner this season, faded back to sixth and was involved in a lap 17 wreck after contact from Kevin Gambacorta.

Fearn had no challengers on the ensuing restart after the Bennett wreck and easily drove away, leaving Butler and Mavlouganes to battle for second late.
