Chris Correll celebrates victory in the SK Light Modified feature at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl Saturday

WATERFORD – Corey Barry saw a perfect season in the SK Light Modified division in 2015 go spinning out of his hands Saturday evening at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

Barry, who had won the first three SK Light Modified features of the season at the Speedbowl, got spun out of the lead on the final lap of Saturday’s event by Paul Buzel.

Buzel went on to take the checkered flag, but was immediately disqualified from the victory by track officials, handing the victory in the 25-lap feature to Chris Correll of New London.

“I had about a fifth place car really,” Correll said. “… I was just trying to ride it out and finish and take what I could get out of it. Next thing I know I saw Corey and Buzel banging it up. I thought ‘This could work out, this could be good.’”

Paul French of Andover was second and Rick Williams of Groton third.

Barry, of Plainfield, the reigning division champion, was trying to make it a perfect four-for-four in the division this year before getting spun.

Barry had gone around Buzel for the lead with 13 laps remaining and looked easily on the way to victory before a late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish.

On the final lap, contact from Buzel sent Barry spinning. Barry’s car was hit hard by Alan Tirrell after the spin.

“That’s what happens when you’ve got little punk ass kids in this division that don’t know how to drive,” Barry said. “He gets on my bumper all the way through the corner and he doesn’t know how to back off. One of these days, if he ever moves up, they’re going to teach him well and he’s going to get into a lot wrecks that he’s going to cause himself.”

Buzel, of Trumbull, said Barry slowed the pace far further than normal out of turn two on the final lap.

“Me and Corey were racing hard for the lead, we were racing good and clean,” Buzel said. “I tried to get him as good as I could and he was kind of backing up in the corner and we just got together. Unfortunately he spun out.”

The kid turned us plan and simple because his car is way better then he will ever be we will be back and hold ower heads high because that’s how corey races

  2. Barry was break checking him through the last 8 laps, lap times slowed to almost a full second a lap. On the first restart Barry drove Buzel up the track in the front stretch outside wall. When Barry moves up into the SK and slows the lane and break checks everyone we will see who causes all the crashing on himself. Guy’s in the SK step on the gas in the middle of the turn not on the breaks. Then we will see who calls who a bunk ass kid.

how Corey races. Its SK lite ask Glenn Griswold or a half dozen other SK lite drivers how Corey drives.. Corey Barry has won some races and he thinks he`s Jeff Gordon! .he couldn`t even crack the top ten in sk lite at Stafford with the teenagers..

  4. “Barry had gone around Buzel for the lead with 13 laps remaining and looked easily on the way to victory before a late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish”.

So if he was easily on the way to winning how could he be brake (not break) checking anyone? And when ho took the lead he did it on the outside so he clearly had the better car.

Anyway I have watched the 9 for quite some time now and he has not got the backbone (I would rather say BA!*S) to pass on the outside, he is a bottom feeder so he is not much of a race car driver in my book. He needs the bottom to race and if you are on the bottom, and he wants the bottom, he will move you to get it. I have watched other drivers along with Barry give him the top before and he elected to move them rather than drive around him. There are race car drivers and there are race car drivers, Barry is a race car driver and Buzel is a wanna be race car driver. He has more car that brain and really needs to learn how to drive the car rather than run over people. How many features has he lost when he has had the dominant car just because he was out of control. I have listened to him in the pits blame everyone else when he looses rather that take the blame himself. Three weeks ago he lost it all by himself and put it in the wall.

“Me and Corey were racing hard for the lead, we were racing good and clean,” Buzel said. “I tried to get him as good as I could and he was kind of backing up in the corner and we just got together. Unfortunately he spun out.”

Really? What do you call what you did 2 weeks ago with 3 to go in turn 2? You flat ran over the guy to move him for the lead and that’s exactly what happened last night and two weeks in a row it has backfired and you lost.

So what he got moved up on the restart. It is not like he has never driven anyone else up the track before so please don’t go there.

  5. I guess humphry was not around to see Buzel’s 3 straight wins last year in September, all on the outside. When a car runs in the middle lane and blocks and break checks you and then runs up into your line like in this race. Why risk going to the outside., remember what Barry did to Glen Griswold a year or so ago. Please get some glasses.

  6. I don’t have a dog in this fight so lets leave it at this, we will agree to disagree. The only people that can fix this is the officiating staff a the NLWSB. Lets see if they get involved and do the right thing.

  7. 39 was brake checking… Clear as day.

  8. The 9 drives like a punk ass. If he had to pay to fix his own car things would change. He’ll get his payback.

  9. At least he doesn’t ball it up in practice on an annual basis…

  10. Great to see an adult threaten a minor and it becomes public record. Must be the result of a 10th grade education.

  11. The issue was already discussed with officiating staff a the NLWSB, then Buzel was scored 7th and Barry 8th.

  12. Buzz not sure what race you watched or lap times you looked at but they never slowed by a second in fact the 39 had his best lap on lap 19 the only lap not in the 14s would be the lap they went back to green. Your kid f-Ed up admit and move on as far as the minor thing he’s old enough to drive a modified then he’s old enough to deal with the consequences of his actions

  13. Could not have said it better myself Mod Fan. Thank you for the clarity.

Buzz told me to get some glasses but maybe I really don’t need any cause you and I saw the same race!

Sounds like Buzz may be related? Just a thought………

  14. Need to look at the all lap times not just Barry’s fastest lap obviously!. We will see where there racing takes them in the future. Who gets the sponsorship and future rides. Just observe how they speak in an interview with the press, this is a good indication. Mod Fan agree with you 100% on accountability, however the first step in being accountable is understanding what was wright and what was wrong and standing up for yourself.

  15. To use your own words, Buzz, you need to look at all lap times, not just the best. According to MyLaps. Barry’s times were AT MOST .049 seconds slower than his fastest on lap 19 from laps 17 through 23. Lap 24 was off by .432, so you MIGHT want to get your facts straight before you start talking.

    Just sayin.

  16. It figures, the one night I skip the Bowl and I miss all this entertainment.

  17. Brake Checking aside, which I saw with my own 4 eyes… Ted Christopher uses his bumper to move people for wins and he is dubbed the KING and a Hero… This kid does it and he is suddenly the dirtiest driver ever… Double Standard Much?

  18. Buzz what would of been the correct thing to do is pass him like he passed your car all season clean. If he was holding you up so much why didn’t you pass him on the out side? the only slow lap was when they went back to green if the 9 car was so much faster he would drive around on the out side instead he dumped Barry knowing it was his only chance to win. I was hoping the bowl would park him for a few weeks after he’s done this two races in a row

  19. Mod fan, who needs to check their math, The math and physics tell the story, and you just answered the question for us, that’s why I had you look at it. In lap 23/24 Barry slowed the lap down by deference of .433 almost half a second, 1/2 second is pretty easy to see and this was were Barry was brake checking. Barry was leading not Buzel and he was setting the pace lap to lap. There is no other reduction or split in lap to lap times this significant. If they crossed the line together I bet you would have a full second off the aprox ave. lap speed of the first 23 laps. So you need to get the basic 5th grade level math problem thought out before you further comment. If you would like to see the deceleration rates and velocity changes in the turn I can calculate that for you to. but of course that’s if you think I should consider uniform acceleration rates only. Have a good night.

  20. Mod Fan I was referring to Rich’s analytical skills in the above, you did not make the comment.

  21. Buzz you might think your a tough guy on the internet but I doubt you have the balls to say any thing to anyone’s face. As far as lap 23/24 being slower that would be when the caution came out bad lap 24 is back to green first lap under green is always slower but I guess u should know that. the leader sets the pace end of story of if jr is so great he should of drove around him. I guess it’s only ok for you guys to block and run people up the track like you did to the 05. Guess I’ll just stick to going to stafford to watch as cars like u have made a mockery of the skl at the bowl

  22. IMO if the lap time was indeed .433+/- difference in the same lap(s) there should have been no problem in passing Barry on the outside unless he was using up 3 lanes or if someone is afraid to move to the outside. Nothing proves a point better than to blow by someone on the outside.

  23. So, let’s talk math.

Average lap time for the 25 lap race – 14.84221
Average time for the last 13 laps – 14.7349
Average for last 13 laps MINUS lap 25 – 14.709

If there’s one thing that I can’t stand, it’s confusing things with “facts” that are made up. You do the math, I sure did. So, where is this mythical “full second a lap slower” in the last 8 laps? And HOW, pray tell, does a half second off on a SINGLE LAP translate to ” If they crossed the line together I bet you would have a full second off the aprox ave. lap speed of the first 23 laps.”

Disclaimer – Don’t go to Waterford, don’t know Corey Barry or Paul Buzel. Been involved in racing for 50+ years. Hate blind ignorance or purposeful disingenuosness.
