WATERFORD – A two-race winless streak for Corey Barry only seemed like an eternity.
That would be the case for a driver who won four of the first five events of the season, but had to wait over a month to get win number five.
After finishing second in the last two events at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Barry drove away from the field with ease Saturday to win the 25-lap SK Light Modified feature.
It was the fifth victory in eight events this year at Waterford for Barry.
“It’s kind of weird when you’re [in victory lane] for four of the first five races and then you’re not there for a couple weeks it’s like ‘What am I missing?’” Barry said. “But, hey, a win’s a win and it’s not like we’ve had bad finishes. … There’s no complaining from me.”
Josh Galvin of Oakdale was second and Rick Williams of Haddam third.
Barry, the division’s reigning champion, has finished first or second in every event he has finished this season. He has two second place finishes. He was eighth on June 6 in an event where he was involved in a crash.
On Saturday, Barry went by Galvin for the lead on lap nine and went unchallenged the rest of the way, opening more than a straightaway lead in front of Williams by the checkered.
“This crew does an amazing job every week and they made my job easy this week,” Barry said. “Sometimes in these races its whoever gets out first and hides wins. I knew I had a good starting spot and I knew I had to make my move early. We just got out there and didn’t look back.”
When the season started Barry had said his team would run part-time in an effort to prepare for a possible move in divisions for the 2016 season.
Saturday Barry said the team has decided they will run the remainder of the season full-time. Barry holds a 19-point lead over Paul Buzel in the standings. Buzel had won the previous two events before Saturday on July 4 and July 25.
“We’re going to finish this up,” Barry said of running full-time for the rest of the season. “As long as there are no major issues we’re going to be here.
“I haven’t even looked at [the standings]. It’s the last thing on my mind right now. I’m just coming to here to try and get podium finishes and finish the races. Points lead is the points lead. My dad has always said if you get wins the points take care of themselves.”
