WATERFORD – The hunt for a third Limited Sportsman championship at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl is heating up for Al Stone III.

Stone’s mission to widen his huge lead in the division continued Saturday when the Durham driver ran away with victory in the 25-lap Limited Sportsman feature at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the second consecutive victory for Stone, who won last week’s 50-lap feature for the division.

“It was just hard work,” Stone said. “It took about a half a season, three-quarters of a season to get this thing where it really is right now. A lot of hard work on the new car. We couldn’t be more pleased. We’re absolutely thrilled with the performance lately. The thing is running great. It’s just a great season so far.”

Allen Coates of Ledyard was second and Ed Gertsch Jr. of East Haven third.

It was the fourth victory overall this season for Stone, who won Limited Sportsman division championships in 2008 and 2010. Stone now holds a 76-point lead over second place Monte Gibbs in the standings.

“We’re not going to lay over and take it,” Stone said. “We want to win. Winning is what we come to the track for. Championships are awesome too. We tried point racing at the beginning and now we’re going after some wins. … We kept working on the car. The car wasn’t perfect at the beginning of the year. But here we are, four wins with five races to go and a great point lead. We’re going to just keep trying to win.”
