WATERFORD – Al Stone III is known at the Waterford Speedbowl for regularly having one of the best looking rides at the track.

And Saturday he showed that he even knows how to win championships in the most stylish of manners.

Stone went to the lead past Jason Chicolas on a late restart and won the 25-lap Limited Sportsman feature Saturday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

The fifth victory of the season for Stone clinched his third championship in the division with one event still to go this year.

“It is a special thing,” Stone said of clinching the title with a victory. “It just adds to the excitement of it. With 13 laps to go I think we were like 10th and we needed a caution. We were stuck on the outside and we weren’t going anywhere. I was trying to do what I could do. I was just trying to be patient and letting the cards fall. I figured whatever was going to happen would happen and the cautions came and our car never slowed down.”

Stone became the first driver in track history to win three titles in the division.

“It’s where we started,” Stone said. “We ventured out into the [SK Modifieds] and did some other things. But [this division] was our home. It’s where we’re comfortable. And you can see from the competition out there that’s it’s top notch.”

Stone also won championships in the division in 2008 and 2010.

Stone celebrated Saturday in victory lane with his year and half old son Dominic.

“We’ve definitely worked hard all year on this car. Brand new car and I couldn’t do it without my father,” Stone said. “He went down to North Carolina to get this thing. … My father put a lot of time into this thing. That’s pretty awesome.

“In 2008 that was special because it was our first and in 2010 we made a huge comeback and won on the last night,” Stone said. “And this one is special because I can enjoy it with my son for the first time. … It’s a special championship. We worked so hard this year to not have the issues we had the last two years. Not that we didn’t have good equipment, but we needed to make a change and the changes were made and I think the results speak for themselves.”

Chicolas, of Sutton, Mass. held on for second and Corey Coates of Ledyard was third.
