WATERFORD – After winning three consecutive Legends championships at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Jason Palmer made the big jump to the tracks Late Model division looking for a new challenge.

Saturday he achieved the goal he’s been striving to attain.

Palmer, of Berlin, used a third place finish in the 30-lap Late Model feature Saturday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl to clinch his first championship in the division, with one event still remaining this season.

Palmer scored five victories in 2015 on the way to his first title. Palmer won Legends titles at the Speedbowl in 2007, ’08 and ’09 before moving the Late Model in 2010.

“It’s awesome,” Palmer said. “It feels awesome, it really does. Words can’t describe it. We were Legends car champions and we were kind of the hot shoe there for a while and then we moved up to this division looking for a challenge and that’s what we got. I think this year we overcame the challenge. It was a lot of fun, definitely a lot of fun.”

Anthony Flannery of East Hampton won the Late Model feature. Jeff Smith of Old Lyme was third.

Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon scored victory in the 25-lap Mini Stock feature. Jordan Hadley of Waterford was second and Charles Canfield of East Haven third.
