THOMPSON – Long distance races aren’t about having the best car, but often who has the one that lasts longest.

Thursday at Thompson International Speedway Jim Banfield was the endurance man.

Banfield, of Glastonbury, was in the right place at the right time and had it all fall the right way in winning the 50-lap Super Late Model feature Thursday at Thompson.

Rick Gentes of Woonsocket, R.I. was second, but later disqualified moving Colbey Fournier of Berkley, Mass. to second and Derek Ramstrom of West Boylston, Mass. to third.

“I don’t know what to say,” Banfield said. “We were just kind of riding around there for a while.”

Early in the event it looked like Ramstrom had the car to beat, Larry Gelinas used a daring move on a lap 37 restart to move from third to the lead.

But three laps later, Gelinas and Ramstrom ended up spinning together in turn two in a battle for the top spot, giving the lead to Mike O’Sullivan

But on lap 48, O’Sullivan slowed with a flat tire, giving Banfield the lead and the victory.

“At the end, racing [O’Sullivan] like that, I’ve never been able to racing him like that,” Banfield said. “I was pushing up a little bit in the center [of the corner] and I was able to really drive in there hard, but I was still just a little loose and I couldn’t quite get him. But he must have had a tire go flat.”
