WATERFORD – Dillon Moltz was the hot Late Model driver for the first eight races of the season at the Waterford Speedbowl, winning half of the events during that span.

Now his team has seemingly found the setup for the hot times.

Moltz, of Waterford, snapped a three-race losing streak by winning the 30-lap Late Model feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton was second and Jeff Smith of Old Lyme third.

It was the first win for Moltz at Waterford since June 16th. Between victories he had a second place finish and two fourth place runs.

“It seemed like we were lacking like a month or a month and a half ago,” Moltz said. “We were kind of lacking right there in the middle of the summer with the heat. So we kind of had to go back to the drawing board and we tried a few different things and we seemed to have got it back for the hot weather and we’re back in victory lane.”

Moltz went to the outside of Smith at the front of the field with 26 laps left. A lap later he edged out in front of Smith to take over the lead.

Thomas went by Smith for second with 23 laps left by then Moltz had quickly built a lead Thomas couldn’t challenge.

“I knew I had to get it done quick,” Moltz said. “I wasn’t wasting any time getting out to the lead to kind of get a good distance and kind of set it on cruise control. It took Bruce a little bit to get into second and then I was on cruise control. I wasn’t pushing the car that hard. He started getting a little bit closer so I started picking it up, but the car was dead on tonight.”

Said Thomas: “We were both just flat out racing. My car was a little bit tight. We were just too close to the same speed. He was better than me in the beginning and I was a little bit better at the end, but he could have been saving something. Good job to him.”
