Corey Hutchings Gets Street Stock Win At Waterford; Walt Hovey Jr. Closes In On Title

WATERFORD – Corey Hutchings in victory lane after a Street Stock feature was a hardly a surprise to see Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl. Hutchings leads the division in victories this season.

The bigger surprise was that he got to victory while sharing the podium with Josh Galvin.

Hutchings and Galvin have had a season’s worth of issues together on the track at Waterford in 2012.

Saturday Hutchings, of Salem, survived another full contact battle with Galvin and then passed Dan Darnstaedt for the lead on lap 21 to win the 25-lap feature.

Brandon Plemons of Uncasville was second and Galvin, of Franklin, was third.

“I don’t know what it is, myself and [Josh Galvin], we just can’t race together,” Hutchings said. “When I get to him he blocks me and hits me and I hit him back. It’s mutual ‘Game on’ with him and I. So I was really surprised to see both of us get in the podium because normally we take care of each other and neither one of us gets to the podium. So it was good to see us both actually finish the race.”

It was the fifth victory of the season for Hutchings, who wasn’t isn’t involved in the division’s championship chase.

“I’m tickled to death,” Hutchings said. “I think the five wins proves we probably had the best car overall most of the races. We had a little bad luck early in the year. I missed a few races. No regrets. Coming in my main goal was to run [Stafford Motor Speedway] in a Late Model. I committed to them first before I built the [Street Stock].”

Walt Hovey Jr. of Chaplin finished fifth in the event. He will take a nearly insurmountable 33-point lead over Galvin into the division’s final event of the season, a 50-lap feature on Sunday.
