Thompson Speedway Expected To Host NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour At Least Three Times In 2013

At least three dates have been agreed upon for NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events to be held at Thompson International Speedway in 2013 according to sources close to the track and NASCAR.

As of now it’s expected that Thompson will host the season opener for the division at its Icebreaker weekend in April and also the season finale for the division as part of the track’s World Series weekend in October.

The track is also expected to host an event on Thursday Aug. 15.

NASCAR spokesperson Jason Christley could not confirm any of the information and said a schedule for the division is expected to be released at some point in the next two weeks.

The Whelen Modified Tour has visited Thompson four times annually the past two seasons at Thompson. Last year the track hosted the division on Icebreaker weekend, World Series weekend, for a Thursday night show in August and for the North-South Showdown in early September The North-South Showdown, which brings the Whelen Modified Tour and Whelen Southern Modified Tour together for separate points races and then a combined showdown event, made its debut at the track in 2011.

Thompson Speedway management has been quiet about possible major changes to weekly racing at the track in 2013. In October track owner Don Hoenig said he wasn’t sure what the weekly racing schedule at the track could look like. Since then a schedule at the track for 2013 has been a mystery along with what the future holds for the possibility of the creation of a road course at the facility.

The Valenti Modified Racing Series announced its 2013 schedule recently and on it were commitments to race three events at Thompson next year. The events included two Sunday races, on May 19 and July 28, and an Oct. 19 event, expected to be part of the Saturday card of World Series weekend at the track.

The Modified Racing Series also ran a Sunday event last July at Thompson.

There has been much speculation that track officials could be scrapping weekly racing altogether at the track, minimizing the schedule or moving the weekly events from Thursday evenings to Sunday’s. Thompson Speedway management has said they expect to reveal their plans for 2013 within the next two weeks.

  1. lower the pit fees.

  2. Pit prices at Thompson are on par with every other track. They simply do not offer the $10 off discount if you have a NASCAR License… That is their prerogative… The only races that are really very expensive are the multi-day events. JMO
