Stafford Motor Speedway is the last of state’s short track’s to kick open the doors for the 2013 season.

That happens this weekend at the half-mile oval with the running of the 42nd Spring Sizzler at the track.

Saturday: Practice and qualifying for all divisions; Features: 20-lap SK Light Modified, 20-lap Limited Late Model, 15-lap DARE Stock and 25-lap Northeast Mini Stock. Grandstands open: 11 a.m.; Practice begins: 11 a.m.; Qualifying begins: 2:30 p.m.
Sunday: Features: 200-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Spring Sizzler, 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified and 30-lap Late Model. Pit party begins: 11 a.m.; Features begin: 1 p.m.
Tickets: $42, $38.50. Youth (6-14), $5. Children 5 and under: free.
More: The season opening event at Stafford Motor Speedway. … The showcase event of the weekend is the 200-lap Whelen Modified Tour race. … Marks the second of 14 events for the Whelen Modified Tour this season. Seven-time series champion Mike Stefanik won the season opening event for the series on April 14 at Thompson International Speedway. Eight of the 14 events this season will be contested at Connecticut short tracks. Stafford will host the division four times year. After the Spring Sizzler, the Modified Tour returns to the track May 24, Aug. 2 and Sept. 29. The division also races at Thompson on Aug. 15 and Oct. 20 and at the Waterford Speedbowl on June 22. … The field for Sunday’s Whelen Modified Tour event will be set by time trial qualifying on Saturday. … Reigning Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby is the defending champion of the Spring Sizzler. …. Coby is one of six Whelen Modified Tour regulars that will also complete weekly this year in Stafford’s SK Modified division. Other Whelen Modified Tour regulars competing weekly at Stafford include Ted Christopher, Woody Pitkat, Eric Berndt, Ryan Preece and Rowan Pennink. … Saturday’s 25-lap feature for the Northeast Mini Stock Tour marks the inaugural event for the division at Stafford. This is the first year that the series will compete at all three Connecticut short tracks. … After the Sizzler, Stafford Speedway opens up for regular weekly racing for the rest of the season on May 10.
