On Tap: Kicking Off The Connecticut Short Track Racing Season At The Waterford Speedbowl

Sure, there’s plenty of places in Connecticut still with snow on the ground.

Despite, old man winter refusing to loosen its grip on the state, it’s time to go racing and the chill won’t slow that from happening this weekend at the Waterford Speedbowl.

The shoreline oval kicks short track racing back to life in the state for 2013 with the running of the Budweiser Blastoff.

Festivities kick off Friday with practice at the track. Saturday will see qualifying for all divisions and a handful of feature events. Sunday the heavy hitters hit the track with a 100-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series feature and a 63-lap SK Modified feature anchoring the show.

Saturday: Qualifying for all divisions. Features: 25-lap SK Light Modified, 20-lap Legends, 20-lap Bandolero’s, 25-lap New England Truck Series, 20-lap X-Car, 20-lap Super X-Car and 25-lap NEMA Lite. Practice begins, 9 a.m.; Grandstands open, 11:30 a.m.; Features tentatively scheduled: 5 p.m.

Sunday: Features: 100-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series, 63-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified, 50-lap Late Model, 30-lap Street Stock, 30-lap Mini Stock and 25-lap NEMA Midget. Pit party: 9:30 a.m.; Features begin: noon.

More: The first short track racing event of the 2013 season in Connecticut. The Valenti Modified Racing Series highlights the Sunday schedule at the track with that division’s season opening event for their 19-race 2013 schedule. The field for Sunday’s Valenti Modified Racing Series feature will be set through heat races on Saturday. Sunday’s Valenti Modified Racing Series feature marks the first of eight events at state short tracks this year for the division. The Valenti Modified Racing Series, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2013, returns to Waterford Aug. 10. The Valenti Modified Racing Series also competes at Stafford Motor Speedway (June 21, Aug. 30 and Sept. 13) and Thompson International Speedway (May 19, July 25 and Oct. 19) this season. The Waterford Speedbowl goes right from the season opener into its weekly Saturday night schedule, running the first Whelen All-American Series Saturday night show of the year on April 13.
