On Tap: Kicking Off The Whelen Modified Tour Season At The Icebreaker At Thompson Speedway

Seems like just a few weeks ago the icicles were just forming as the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour closed its 2012 season at Thompson International Speedway’s World Series weekend.

Now the snow has finally melted away, the temperatures are rising and the time has arrived to fire up the Whelen Modified Tour once again.

Milford’s Doug Coby begins defense of his 2012 Whelen Modified Tour championship with the running of the division’s Icebreaker 150 Sunday at Thompson.

Saturday: Practice and qualifying for all divisions; Features: 20-lap Limited Sportsman, 15-lap Mini Stock. Practice begins, 10 a.m.; Grandstands open, 11 a.m.; Qualifying events begin: 3 p.m.
Sunday: Features: 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, 50-lap Granite State Pro Stock Series, 30-lap Sunoco Modifieds; 25-lap Late Models, 20-lap Lite Modifieds, 20-lap Limited Sportsman and 15-lap Mini Stocks. Features begin: 12:15 p.m.
Tickets: Adults $44; Youth (6-14) $10, children 5 and under free.
More: The opening event of the season at Thompson International Speedway and the first of 14 events this season on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Eight of those 14 events will be run at Connecticut short tracks. Thompson will host the division two more times this season (Aug. 15, Oct. 20). The Modified Tour will also run four times at Stafford Motor Speedway (April 28, May 24, Aug. 2, Sept. 29) and once at the Waterford Speedbowl (June 22). … The field for Sunday’s Whelen Modified Tour feature will be set through time trials on Saturday. … Sunday marks the inaugural appearance of the Granite State Pro Stock Series at Thompson. … After the Icebreaker Thompson doesn’t run again until May 19, when the track hosts a special event highlighted by a Valenti Modified Racing Series feature. Thompson kicks off its NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly Thursday night shows on May 30.
