WATERFORD – Corey Hutchings came to the Waterford Speedbowl Saturday with plans to run one feature, his regular Street Stock ride at the track.

He left the track a first-time winner in the New England Truck Series.

Hutchings took over Tom Metcalf’s Truck and raced it to victory in the 25-lap New England Truck Series feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Before Saturday’s heat races for the division Hutchings had never even sat in one of the Trucks.

“We were pitting across from each other and I was like, is Tommy not driving his Truck today?,” Hutchings said. “So I know Tommy from racing in the Late Models, so I went over and said ‘You want me to wheel this thing?’ just kind of joking around with him. He’s like ‘Why, would you?’ I was like ‘I’m the same size as you.’ I got in the car, we never checked the sway bar, we put the air pressures in and went. I went out there and he was like ‘What do you think?’ and I said ‘This thing is pretty good.’ He said ‘You want to race in the feature’ and I was like ‘ I can win with this thing I think’ and he said ‘Then it’s yours.’ And that’s how it happened. I didn’t plan on winning a Truck race tonight.”

Duane Noll was second and Danny Butler third.

Hutchings passed Noll on a lap three restart and never trailed again.
