Waterford Notes: Keith Rocco Tops In Late Models; Norm Root And Bill Leonard Also Gets Wins

WATERFORD – The points leader was in padding the advantage mode Saturday in the Late Model division at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Keith Rocco

Keith Rocco of Wallingford drove away from the field in the closing laps to win the 30-lap Late Model feature at the Waterford Speedbowl Saturday.

It was the fourth victory in nine Late Model events this season at Waterford for Rocco.

Dave Farrington Jr. of Jay, Me. was second and Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton third.

Rocco stretched his lead in the division standings to 23 points over 2012 Late Model champion Dillon Moltz of Waterford.

Rocco went past Farrington for the lead with seven laps remaining after battling side-by-side with him for the top spot. Farrington was making his third career start in the division.

“The car was really good,” Rocco said. “I got up along next to Dave and my spotter said ‘He’s a good kid, he’s going to run you clean so make sure you give him plenty of room.’ We had an awesome battle side-by-side, I don’t think I’ve ever run side-by-side that long with somebody without touching. It’s great to have him down here racing with us. We need guys like that in our sport.”

Norm Root Jr. of Old Saybrook won the 20-lap Street Stock. It was the first victory since 2011 for Root. Joe Arena of Bristol was second and Chris Meyer of North Franklin third.

Bill Leonard of Charlestown, R.I. won the 20-lap Mini Stock feature. Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon was second and Wayne Burroughs of Oakdale third.
