THOMPSON – Matt Gallo joined an interesting club Thursday at Thompson International Speedway.

Matt Gallo celebrates his first SK Modified victory at Thompson Speedway Thursday

The Berlin driver can now count himself in the fraternity of drivers that have won SK Modified features at all three Connecticut short tracks.

Gallo went to the lead from the outside pole on the first lap and never trailed again in winning the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Thursday at Thompson.

Todd Ceravolo of Gales Ferry was second and Keith Rocco of Wallingford third.

It was the third career SK Modified victory for Gallo and his first at Thompson. He won his first SK Modified feature on Sept. 13, 2008 at the Waterford Speedbowl. His first victory at Stafford was on June 4, 2010.

At one point during the event Gallo had built up about a 15-car length lead over Ceravolo, who was left battling hard with Rocco for the runner-up spot.

“These guys are the tops in the country so you’ve got to sometimes run out and hide from them,” Gallo said. “They didn’t seem to close on my too bad and the cautions didn’t come. That really helped out. My car started to tighten up at the end so they were creeping on me a little bit. I made sure I hit my marks and counted down my laps.”
