WATERFORD – The third victory of the season for reigning Late Model division champion Dillon Moltz proved declaration time for the Waterford driver Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.
“The 28 car is back,” Moltz said.
Moltz passed Jeff Smith for the lead with 16 laps left and never trailed again on the way to victory in the 30-lap Late Model feature Saturday at Waterford.
“We’ve found a couple things and made some changes and it’s definitely the old 28 from last year and I think it’s here to stay for the rest of the season,” Moltz said.
Jason Palmer of Berlin was second and division points leader Keith Rocco of Wallingford rallied from a flat tire with 14 laps left to finish third.
Rocco now holds a 23-point lead over Moltz in the standings.
“There’s a lot of racing left,” Moltz said. “You don’t start thinking of [points] until you get down to inside the last month of racing.”
In the 25-lap Mini Stock feature, Ian Brew of Wood River Junction came back to the track with a backup car after destroying his primary car last week and won.
Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon was second and Bill Leonard of Charlestown, R.I. was third.
“I put 12 hours into it yesterday,” Brew said of preparing the backup ride. “I spent five hours on today and I spent all day in the pits trying to fine tune everything I could. … The only thing I was nervous about was the engine because I had never run that engine before. I’ve had it for about a year and I’m thinking, ‘Why didn’t I bring it out sooner?’
“I had to feather the gas coming out of the corner because the thing just lights the tires up coming out of the corner it’s got so much power.”
Said Cassidy: “Ian’s got a really fast car. He wrecked his other one last week so congratulations. I wish he had the old car because this one is faster than the other one I think.”
