And in a heated SK Modified championship chase at Thompson, getting to the front on the track and in the standings was imperative for Keith Rocco on Thursday.

Rocco, of Wallingford, drove away from Kerry Malone over the closing laps to win the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Thursday at Thompson.

Malone, of Needham, Mass. was second and Ryan Preece of Berlin third.

With one points race remaining before the championship is decided, the victory jumped Rocco from a tie for second place with Malone into the points lead.

Woody Pitkat of Stafford, who came into the event with a four-point lead over Rocco and Malone, fell into a tie for second place with Malone after a fourth place finish.

It was the fifth victory in nine SK Modified events at Thompson this season for Rocco.

“We’ve got a good car every week,” Rocco said. “If we don’t get jingled up and all the wheels are straight we always have the potential to win here.”

Rocco went to the lead when Todd Ceravolo slipped up the track in turn two while running up front on lap 18.

“He did the same thing last week when I behind him,” Rocco said. “It’s like his car gets free in the middle [of the corner] and just goes up the track.”
