WATERFORD – The Waterford Speedbowl, the place of dreams?
That was the case Saturday for Corey Hutchings of Salem.
The veteran of many a battle on the short tracks of Connecticut had longed dreamed of crossing the finish line backwards for a victory.
That dream became reality Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.
A spinning Hutchings saw his back bumper cross the finish line first in three-way battle for victory with Jay Stuart and Paul Newcomb in the 25-lap Outlaw Stock race at Waterford.
Stuart, of Preston, was second, crossing the finish line sliding. Newcomb was third.
“I always said I wanted to win one backwards, but I didn’t think it would ever happen,” Hutchings said. “That was incredible. What a wild finish. Those guys had the best cars and they played with each other and I just sat there and reaped the benefits.”
Contact between Newcomb and Stuart coming off turn four on the final lap sent Stuart spinning into Hutchings.
“[Newcomb] just turned into me,” Stuart said. “It was like that the whole race. He drove into me several times.”
