THOMPSON – Keith Rocco held off the charges of Ted Christopher and Tommy Barrett to win the 75-lap Valenti Modifed Racing Series event Saturday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.

It was the third career Valenti Modified Racing Series victory for Rocco, a part-timer with the series, and his second win this season. He won earlier this season at the Waterford Speedbowl and had his first series victory in 2011 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Rocco started third and quickly went the lead. He spent the bulk of the event fighting Christopher at the front of the field. Christopher faded late, putting Barrett in charge of chasing Rocco.

But over the closing laps Rocco was able to escape Barrett’s pursuit.

“We had to take the gamble and get out front and just try to hold the lead,” Rocco said. “The guys put a lot of pressure on me. [Christopher] worked my car pretty hard. Barrett, I knew he was saving right to the end. I’ve got to thank this whole team, we have a lot of fun.”

Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. rallied from power steering issues to pass Barrett for second place coming to the white flag. Barrett, of Millis, Mass., held on for third.

“These guys didn’t quit,” Pennink said. “We pitted caution after caution. This is unbelievable.”
