The stage was set for one of the biggest weekends in short track racing in the country.

World Series of Speedway Racing Weekend kicked off Friday with a daylong practice session and then heat races for numerous divisions after the sun went down.

This year’s event brings together 15 divisions for three days of competition on the .625-mile oval at Thompson Speedway.

It might be the most extensive menu of types of racecars on a short track racing card in the country. From two Tour Modified divisions, to a plethora of weekly divisions, to Pro Stocks, Midgets, Trucks and SuperModifieds, the World Series has a little bit of everything.

The showcase event of the weekend is Sunday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season finale, where Ryan Preece of Berlin will attempt to clinch his first series title.

Preece goes into the event with a 26-point lead over 2012 series champion Doug Coby of Milford. Preece needs to finish 22nd or better in Sunday’s 150-lap Whelen Modified Tour event to clinch his first series title.

The Whelen Modified Tour will be the second touring Modified division to hit the track on the weekend. Saturday the Valenti Modified Racing Series will have its season ending event. Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., a regular on the Whelen Modified Tour, has already clinched the Valenti Modified Racing Series title.
