WATERFORD – Being in the right spot at the right time when everything went bad in front paid dividends for Corey Barry Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Barry inherited the lead when the top two cars were involved in a wreck with nine laps remaining and then went on to win the 25-lap SK Light Modified feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the fifth victory of the season for Barry, of Plainfield.

“Everybody always says it’s better to be lucky than good,” Barry said. “Tonight I think we had lady luck on our side. My first year I got three wins and I thought that was amazing. To have five wins in a season, this is unreal. And we still have all these races left. From the start it’s been about big picture racing, but wins definitely help.”

Calvin Therrien of Vernon was second and Rick Williams of Haddam third.

Barry was running third when the night went bad for Paul Buzel and Randy Churchill Jr. as they battled for the lead. Coming out of turn four with nine laps remaining, Buzel and Churchill attempted to lap the car of Carlos Gray coming out of turn four. But with Gray up in the racing groove, Buzel made contact with Churchill, putting Churchill in the wall. Buzel was left with a flat tire, giving Barry the lead.

“I don’t know if that was just a case of running out of racing room or, I don’t know. I don’t care who are, that’s a bad night. [Buzel], he was getting antsy and he knew he was going to get stuck behind [Gray] and he just wanted to go too and just ran out of room. It sucks for [Churchill] but it is what it is, that’s racing sometimes.
