THOMPSON – Todd Owen held off Jon Puleo over the closing circuits to win the 30-lap Sunoco 604 Modified feature Wednesday at Thompson Speedway.

“Thank you to the guys putting on this show, [Tom Mayberry and Cris Michaud],” said Owen, of Somers. “It’s unbelievable they keep coming here and helping us racers have a place to race.”

Jon Puleo of Branford was second and Danny Cates of Chaplin third.

“Congrats to Todd, he raced me really well,” Puleo said. “He raced me really well [on March 29], so I had to give it back.”

Said Cates: “This is a brand new car we built over the winter so we’re still kind of learning a little bit with it. We’re still not as good as [Owen and Puleo], but we’re closer than we were last year. We’ll keep tuning on it and trying to get a little better so we can be a couple more spots better.”

On lap four Owen came off turn two in second behind Cates. Contact between the two got Cates wiggled as Owen went by for the lead.

“I want to apologize to [Cates],” Owen said. “I got into him off of [turn] two. I got a run on him, I didn’t mean to even touch him. I’m sure that doesn’t help him, but I definitely didn’t meant to get into him. My apoligiies to him and his guys.”

Owen had a sizable lead over Puleo before caution flew on lap 22. Puleo pestered Owen over the final seven laps, but never could find a lane to the front.

“I didn’t want to see that caution come out” Owen said. “I definitely don’t want to see him next to me here. He goes really good.”
