STAFFORD – On April 27 Nickolas Hovey kicked off his 2025 season at Stafford by winning the first of two two 20-lap SK Light Modified Duel qualifying races to set up for the Friday’s 30-lap feature for the division.
And on Friday Hovey, of Chaplin, kept the momentum rolling from opening day.
Hovey held off the charges of Meghan Fuller to win the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.
It was the sixth career SK Light Modified win at Stafford for Hovey and his ninth win overall at the track.
“I’ve put a lot of work into my restarts, but I really hated to see that many when I was in the lead,” Hovey said. “I’m just happy we were able to work on it. I’ve got to thank my dad, Keith [Rocco] and Todd [Ceravolo], this thing is awesome every time it comes to the track and I wouldn’t be here without them.”
Fuller, of Auburn, Mass., was second and Brian Sullivan of Tolland third.
Fuller controlled at the front over the first six laps and was able to keep Nick Anglace at bay on a lap seven restart.
On lap eight Anglace was able to get under Fuller off of two and the pair came to the line side-by-side to complete the lap, with Fuller edging Anglace at the line.
On lap nine Anglace was able to lead at the side-by-side battle the line once again with Fuller.
Fuller fell back to fourth on lap 10, allowing Hovey to move to third behind second place Casey Vogt.
On lap 15 Vogt found a lane under Anglace for the lead off of turn four with Hovey following past Anglace to second.
On lap 18 Hovey found the lane under Vogt through turn one and completed the pass for the lead off of turn two.
Caution flew on lap 21 for a backstretch incident involving Ron Midford and Austin Goff.
On the lap 21 restart Hovey was able to continue to control out front with Fuller moving past Vogt for second.
“That last restart, I thought we had something for him,” Fuller said. “But the car started to get a little bit squirrelly toward the end.”
