On July 19 and July 20 the NASCAR Modified Tour will run back-to-back events on consecutive days at Monadnock Speedway. It will mark the fourth time since the series’ inception in 1985 that the division will run two points paying events on consecutive days. The last time it happened was 1999.
In 1999 the NASCAR Modified Tour ran on Friday July 16 at Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania and Saturday July 17 at Holland Speedway in New York. The two track are nearly five hours driving time apart.
The odd scheduling quirk came about because the Modified Tour was originally supposed to be part of a Busch Series event card at Nazareth in late May but they were rained out. The only possible way to make up the event was to make the Modified Tour part of the Craftsman Truck Series weekend card at Nazareth and run them on July 16.
Twenty-five teams ran both of the events. At Nazareth 40 cars started the race and five were sent home as non-qualifiers. At Holland there were 28 cars in the starting field and eight teams were sent home as non-qualifiers.
Charlie Pasteryak finişhed fourth in the Nazareth event and third at Holland. We asked him recently what he remembered about that unique racing weekend for the Modified Tour.
