THOMPSON – On June 18 at Thompson Speedway Jon McKennedy used a late charge to the front to score victory in the Thompson Outlaw Modified feature.
Wednesday at Thompson it was once again McKennedy celebrating victory, but this time there was nothing late about his charge.
McKennedy, of Chelmsford, Mass., started on the pole and led every lap on the way to victory in the Outlaw Modified Twisted Tea Midsummer 50 at Thompson Speedway.
Matt Swanson of Acton, Mass. was second and Mikey Flynn of Hampden, Mass. third.
Cam McDermott of Canterbury and Noah Korner of Canton rounded out the top five respectively.
McKennedy controlled at the front from the pole position at the start, with Swanson jumping from fourth to second on the opening lap.
The top three of McKennedy, Swanson and Ronnie Williams settled into a single-file rhythm by lap six, with Keith Rocco deeper back in fourth.
On lap nine Williams used a diving move into turn one to overtake Swanson for second off of turn two.
Williams tried an attack on McKennedy through turns three and four on lap 12, but McKennedy defended his lead off of turn four.
By lap 16 McKennedy and Williams had checked out by a second from third place Swanson. Behind Swanson it was Flynn getting by Rocco for fourth with Chris Pasteryak following to fifth.
McKennedy opened a half second lead over Williams by lap 30. Swanson was three second behind McKennedy in third with fourth place Flynn another four seconds behind Swanson.
The first caution of the event flew on lap 38 for a Glen Steger spin off of turn four. On the ensuing restart McKennedy was able to flash back into control by Williams into turn one and quickly find some breathing room out front.
Caution was right back out on lap 40 when Steger ended up in the wall off of turn four. Under caution second place Williams and fifth place Pasteryak headed to pit road. It set up a restart with McKennedy leading, Swanson in second and Flynn in third. Pasteryak restarted 7th and Williams 8th.
Just after the restart Pasteryak, Rocco and Bryan Narducci had an issue off of turn two to bring the caution right back out.
On the second attempt at a lap 40 restart McKennedy found the preferred line through turn one to leave Swanson in his wake. Behind the leaders McDermott got up to third.
With McKennedy checked out from Swanson, the fourth caution of the event flew when Steger went sliding through the infield grass and into the outside pit wall on lap 49.
On the final restart McKennedy once again handled business at the front. Behind him Flynn overtook McDermott for third place.
