
STAFFORD – In a twist from their typical qualifying format, the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series added a special qualifying heat to Wednesday’s GAF Roofing Modified Masters event.
The RaceChoice.com Pole Dash powered by Better Built Basements put the six fastest drivers from Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series group qualifying into a special heat race to set the top six spots for the 30-car main event.
Jon McKennedy, Eric Goodale, Jake Johnson, Matt Hirschman, Ryan Preece and Stephen Kopcik qualified for the pole dash.
Preece, of Kannapolis, N.C., won the 10-lap Pole Dash.
Johnson controlled the pace at the front at the opening lap. On lap two Preece got by Hirschman for second out of turn two and then went by Johnson for the lead out of turn four.
Preece went unchallenged the rest of the way.
Johnson, of Rehboth, Mass. was second and Goodale, of Riverhead, N.Y. third.
Keith Rocco of Wallingford won the first 10-lap Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series heat race. Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott was second and Mikey Flynn of Hampden, Mass. third.
Dylan Izzo, Ron Silk and Jon Puleo were the other three main event qualifiers from the heat.
Former Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman got spun on lap four of the first heat race. He worked his way back to seventh by lap eight, but spun again after contact battling Tyler Chapman for sixth place and retired from the heat race with front end damage.
Marcello Rufrano of North Haven won the second Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series heat race. Woody Pitkat of Stafford was second and Max Zachem of Preston third.
David Arute, Jacob Perry and Austin Beers were the other three main event qualifiers from heat two.
Joey Cipriano of Plymouth won the third Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series heat race. Chase Dowling of Bethlehem was second and Ronnie Williams of Lebanon third.
Steven Chapman, Matt Gallo and Dana DiMatteo were the other three main event qualifiers from heat two.
Brett Meservey of Brewster, Mass. won the first of two 10-lap consolation events for the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series. Kyle Scisco of Toms River, N.J was second to also advance to the main event lineup. On lap one, Newman spun in turn three and got in the wall and had to be taken off the track by wrecker.
Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, N.Y. won the second of two 10-lap consolation events for the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series. Tyler Chapman of Ellington was second to also advance to the main event lineup.
Chris Pasteryak, Teddy Hodgdon and Noah Korner got provisional starting spots in the main event. Drivers who did not make the main event were Newman, Nick Anglace, Tyler Hines, Will Lambros and John-Michael Shenette.
Rookie Dylan Houghton of Springfield, Mass. won the first of two 15-lap preliminary events to set the field for the 40-lap King of the Crate SK Light Modified feature. Peter Bennett of Windsor was second and Sophya Papp of Goshen third.
Joey Ferrigno of East Hartford won the second 15-lap SK Light Modified preliminary race. Tyler Barry of Stonington was second and Stephen Kalogiannis of New Hartford was third.
