STAFFORD – On his march to becoming the all-time winningest SK Light Modified division driver at Stafford Speedway, extended distance races haven’t filled many of the historic victories for Chris Matthews at the half-mile oval.
On Friday Matthews was looking for a bounce back from a recent rough stretch and the Stafford driver used a special event to get that turnaround he was looking for.
Matthews drove away over the closing laps to win the Monaco Ford SK Light Double Down 40 Friday at Stafford Speedway.
It was the second win of the season and 24th career SK Light Modified victory at Stafford for Matthews. Of those 24 victories, 22 have come in the division’s regular 20-lap events. His only other extended distance win came in a 40-lap event on July 8, 2022.
“It’s huge,” Matthews said. “We’ve been struggling a bit with some mechanical issues, but my crew, my family, no one gives up on this deal. Chassis Pro standing behind us is just great. It’s awesome.”
Nick Anglace of Seymour was second.
“It’s one of those things where it’s nice to finally be back [on the podium],” Anglace said. “… Just really proud to carry the UConn colors this year.”
Sami Anderson of Wolcott held off Daltin McCarthy for third place.
“He was definitely faster than me and I’ve got to just say thank you, thank you, thank you for not killing me,” Anderson said. “He raced me very clean, very respectfully and we ran really hard. I had a blast racing with everybody tonight. … It was clean racing, hard racing, but a lot of fun.”
