Ryan Preece is essentially in a must-win situation when it comes to finding his way as one of the 16 drivers to qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
And the former NASCAR Modified Tour champion has to two races to hunt down that first Cup Series win, Saturday at Richmond Raceway and Aug. 23 at Daytona International.
On Friday at Richmond, Preece put himself in the best place to start when it comes to Saturday’s effort.
Preece won the Busch Pole Award in Cup Series qualifying on Friday at Richmond in preparation for Saturday’s Cook Out 400.
“When I drove it off into turn one, I know I got it all because the amount of time I drove it in there versus the grip she potentially had was definitely on the limit,” Preece said. “It felt really good and [crew chief Derrick Finley] made great adjustments, along with the entire No. 60 RFK team and I’m just proud to have Kroger and Kleenex on the car this weekend.”
It marked the second Cup Series pole award for Preece. He got his first in April 2023 at Martinsville Speedway.
