THOMPSON – Recently Brian Hoar made a decision that he needs to step away from competition for a while.

Saturday at Thompson Speedway he began that break from competition in perfect fashion.

Hoar, of Williston, Vt., inherited the lead late after a restart wreck and held and pulled away from the field over the closing laps to win the 100-lap American Canadian Tour event Saturday at the Sunoco World Series at Thompson Speedway.

It was the first appearance at Thompson for the series.

Brad Babb of Windham, Me. was second and Jimmy Hebert of Williamstown, Vt.

It was the 42nd career ACT victory for Hoar. In victory lane Hoar announced that he was stepping away from competition.

“It’s been a really emotional rollercoaster for me the last few weeks because I made a decision that I’m actually going to hang the helmet up for a while,” Hoar said. “This is it for a little while. I don’t know when. It’s been a struggle emotionally, but this is the way to do it.”

On a lap 93 restart, then leader Dillon Moltz of Waterford and third place Joey Polewarczyk of Hudson, N.H. wrecked in turn one, handing the lead to Hoar, who was running second at the time.

Hoar surmised that Moltz missed a shift on the restart, causing the chain reaction wreck.

“The car was awesome,” Hoar said. “… I’m just really psyched. I was trying to save my stuff behind behind [Eddie MacDonald] and [Moltz] and it really worked ovbviously. We had a little luck there at the end, but we really had a stout car.”

Wayne Helliwell Jr. of Dover, N.H. finished seventh to clinch the series championship.
