It’s a twin bill of racing at New England’s largest speedway when the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour heads New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire, for both the third annual Whelen All-Star Shootout on Friday and New England 100 on Saturday. Below is a look at the race itself and some of the selected participants.

New England 100 Race Setup:
This marks the Whelen Modified Tour’s first of two stops at the 1.058-mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Former champions Todd Szegedy and Doug Coby won each of the two races at the track in 2015. The three-time champion Coby, of Milford, Connecticut, sits atop the standings after six races this season, holding a 17-point lead over Preston, Connecticut driver Max Zachem.

At New Hampshire Motor Speedway:
History:
• The track opened in 1990 on the site of the old Briar Motorsports Park road course and immediately became New England’s largest sports facility of any kind. Measuring 1.058 miles in length, it is the largest speedway in the region, and with seating for nearly 100,00 people, it has the largest capacity of any venue.
• Tommy Ellis won the first NASCAR-sanctioned race held at New Hampshire, winning a 300-lap combination event involving both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.
• NHMS has hosted 63 previous NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events. The track hosts to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races each season.

Notebook:
• Mike McLaughlin won the first Whelen Modified Tour event in New Hampshire Motor Speedway history, a 125-lap event in September of 1990.
• There have been 20 different winners at NHMS, led by Mike Stefanik who has eight career Modified wins at the track.
• There have been 24 different pole winners at NHMS, led by Jan Leaty with six.
• NHMS races have been won from the pole 14 times, yet no race winner has ever led more than 55 laps in any of their victories.
• NHMS is known for producing close finishes. Todd Szegedy won by just 0.041 seconds over Donny Lia in this event last season, one of the closest margins of victory in Tour history.

Comments

  1. Fast Eddie says

Time for bump drafting, a double digit lead change count, and a real close finish!! YEAH!!

  2. Bill Realist says

Active driver #1 in every stat category except total starts. Not competing in “all star” race.

  3. Fast Eddie, the bump draft is gone with the SPEC. Where have you been?

The SPEC doesn’t have what is needed for good ol’ bump drafting. The car behind does not have the reserve that it used to have with the open motors to pull up to the lead car and push it like they used to.

The car behind does not have the oomph to pass when it pulls out from behind the lead car. Watch that this weekend. When the trailing car pulls out from behind the lead car, it just stays there, it does not shoot ahead.

Even the reserve needed for the dive bomb move is very dicey. The car trying to pull the dive does not have the excess capability to get in and down fast enough.

Watch for racing in at least pairs, to work together, to get through traffic and advance.

But then, there are some SPEC motors that are more equal than others…

My prediction… there will be a lead pack of a few cars, the usual cast of characters: 2, 3, 4, 6, 44 and maybe a couple newbies will hang for a few laps, then the main pack, then the back markers. Pretty safe, eh?

There will be pretty good racing in the main pack for this event. There are plenty of pretty good cars. Some might have a breakout day.

  4. dareal, thank you for ANOTHER uneducated page-long analysis and prediction. May I request you go back to telling us about trunnion angles on the front suspension of a modified and their importance.

  5. RaceDayNH says

Dareal… Have you ever raced? I’m so sick of you telling people that they have no clue. I need to know how you are so qualified. If you have never driven in a race have you been on a teams pit crew? If you haven’t done that either have you ever wrenched on a race car? What have you ever done besides walk around in the pits? I have no problem with fans posting their opinions on this site but there is no need to tell others that they are clueless when you yourself have no credentials. Fast Eddie is just pumped for a good race with lots of lead changes… And I’m pretty sure that still happens at NHMS with the spec. It’s still a track drivers are nervous about being the leader on the last lap. So just let people get excited about the race without dumping on them…. I can’t wait to read your long reply where you say a lot but still don’t list any of your qualifications.

  6. Well, just watch the race. There has been much less “bump” in the bump draft as the SPEC motors take over.

There has been much less drafting to overtake as the SPEC motors take over. I would say hardly any drafting to overtake.

Don’t need no credentials to see that, just eyes.

Modified racing at Loudon is very different with SPEC motors.

Much of the racing will take place in the turns with pacing on the straights.

Most passing will be with the help of a partner.

Wonder who will help the 2?

  7. RacedayNH, I have asked the same questions on numerous occasions of dareal and every time he will never answer me or dodge the question. Good luck with your request because I also eagerly await his response!

  8. Joe Lajoie says

That’s the only way you’ll get a short response or none at all from dareal as opposed to his normal ramblings, just ask him what he’s done besides be an all-knowing bleacher creature.

  9. Finally everyone has figured this clown out!!!!!

  10. crazy larry says

I new Humphrey be saying something can you stop ! get a clue it does not take a rocket to see what is going-on get off the recliner much
    all about the keys

    LOL

  11. Andy Boright says

I think Melissa Fifield is going to win.

  12. The 01 had her best results at NHMS, only 3 laps down.

  13. Fast Eddie says

Raceday NH, you are absolutely correct! I go to races and play with my cameras; that’s my thing! Multiple lead changes per lap is VERY cool, kind of like playing chess at 140 mph!
I think I have a lot more mechanical knowledge than the average guy, but I’m not a mechanic by any stretch. Any mechanical comments from me are just opinions of a fan in the seats.
That being said, I think the drafting is a little different with the spec engines, but certainly still there and fun to watch! The spec engines look like they have a little more getting into and in the middle of the corner due to the different weight distribution in the car, but the built engines have more drive off the corner. Down the straight, the built engine will get by the spec, but they’re backing off earlier going into the corners.
